Why I Write

Welcome to my site! The world can get pretty crazy, and it's my goal as an author to create interesting, well-written fiction that can help you escape from life while simultaneously gaining strength and courage to face whatever may come your way. My first book, Hope's Power, and now a sequel, Faith's Birth, are for sale on Amazon and I'd love to hear what you think about them.

Hope's Power

Published April 2020

Margaret is a respectable dressmaker's apprentice in Bristol, filled with hopes and dreams for her future. She plans to marry her best friend’s brother and have her own shop one day, until tragedy strikes her family, leaving her hungry for a solace her comfortable middle class life can't provide. When a remarkable young man from a mysterious American faith seems to have answers, Margaret must decide if her old dreams are enough or if she needs something more—something that threatens to tear her away from everyone and everything she holds dear.

You'll meet Martha, Margaret and William's daughter, who is in the thick of life in Hyrum, Utah, studying with the town midwife and dreaming big, while coping with the adventures and rigors of pioneer life and her father's plural marriage. There is more action, romance, and intrigue than you might think possible for a 15 year old girl-midwife on the verge of womanhood.

Complementary Magic

December 1, 2021

La Magie, the nobility of London, draw their magic from the Great River that runs through the city. But something is amiss in the River. The powers of the upper classes are stagnating, Family Staves of Power are becoming weaker, and the servants and tradesmen with no magic are showing an alarming increase in abilities that were previously dismissed as superstition. When Sorcerer John Harmon is murdered, the Harmon Staff of Power and his vast fortune are passed on to Harmon’s servants, the good-hearted but wholly un-magical Mr. and Mrs Boffin. In this fantastical retelling of Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend, the Boffins and their ward Bella Wilfer must sort through a mystery that reaches from conspiring aristocrats to the darkest corners of London’s underworld.

About Me

My New Writing Habit

When I was little I planned on becoming an author. I filled notebooks with all kinds of stories, co-wrote with my friends, and basically lived in my imagination. In high school I wrote the occasional story, poem, speech, and many essays. I read voraciously. But my plan to become an author was forgotten. In adulthood I started a blog and kept a journal, mostly so I wouldn't forget what it was like to have five rambunctious boys. Every now and then I'd consider writing something and I would think, "I have no interesting ideas." It wasn't until I had my author friend, Jaima Fixsen, over for lunch one day that it occurred to me to make an attempt to write a novel. She encouraged me to start anywhere, with any idea, and made it all sound so easy and like something I should obviously do, that I began to mull it over. While I was doing the dishes, teaching violin (don't tell my students), and driving 18 hours to visit my family (I'm an immigrant to Canada from the US) I suddenly began to have conversations, plot lines, and characters come into existence in my mind. The only way I can describe what was happening to me was the way you feel when you are reading a really captivating book and you wonder what will happen next and you can't tear yourself away—except it was up to me to figure out what would happen next! Writing Hope's Power has been one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. And there are a lot more characters begging me to give them time to come to life. I can't wait!  **See my Blog for FAQ's**
